Business Standard today reported that "To bring small and medium businesses (SMBs) in India to the online space, internet search giant Google has launched an initiative - 'India, Get Your Business Online' - to offer free website, domain and hosting services to SMBs."
This is a great opportunity for website developers & freelances to actually lower their cost of services and pitch to local businesses. In fact, I believe it would be very interesting to see how local engineers / business school students could leverage this opportunity to offer their web-dev skills to small and medium sized businesses as now they have no upfront costs to worry about (only effort, internet connection and a computer is required which is fairly available across the length and breadth of the country in higher education institutions).
A new website has been set up for the same http://www.indiagetonline.in/ . The offer includes the following,
- Free, easy-to-build, professional website, email addresses
- Free .in domain name, web hosting & support for one year
There was a similar trend in the US, 10 years back and now it is in India. Surely a thing which should help improve local businesses become more discoverable. Let's see how it goes.
